How to Spot Counterfeit or Low-Quality Roofing Shingles in the Indian Market

As architectural roofing shingles become the preferred choice for premium villas, resorts, and modern renovations across India, the market has seen an influx of unbranded, grey-market, and outright counterfeit products.

To an untrained eye, an unbranded or substandard asphalt shingle can look nearly identical to a premium architectural product from trusted global manufacturers like IKO or BP Canada when sitting on a showroom counter.

However, once exposed to tropical monsoons, high humidity, and intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation, inferior materials deteriorate rapidly: granules wash away into gutters, shingle tabs curl or split under thermal heat, and adhesives fail during routine windstorms.

Before approving material deliveries for your residential or commercial project, use this physical inspection checklist to ensure you are getting genuine, manufacturer-warranted shingles.

Genuine Architectural Shingles vs. Substandard Imitations

Evaluation MetricCertified Architectural Shingles (e.g., IKO Cambridge / Dynasty)Substandard & Counterfeit Imitations
Fiberglass Core MatHeavy-gauge, non-woven glass fibers with high tear resistance (ASTM D3462)Thin, low-density fiberglass or recycled paper felt; tears easily by hand
Asphalt QualityHigh-grade, oxidized elastomeric bituminous matrix; stays flexible across temperature swingsLow-grade, brittle asphalt with excessive chemical fillers; hardens and cracks in heat
Granule AdhesionDeeply embedded, ceramic-coated mineral granules; minimal runoffLoosely bonded slag/sand; sheds large quantities of granules right out of the wrapper
Wind Fastening ZoneReinforced woven nail tape or high-tack factory sealant strips (e.g., ArmourZone)Narrow, non-reinforced nail line; weak or dried adhesive that fails to bond
Fire & Wind CertificationsClass A Fire Rating (UL 790); ASTM wind resistance up to 210 km/hUncertified, non-rated, or printed with unverified factory stamps
TraceabilityMachine-printed lot numbers, barcodes, and manufacturing plant timestampsPlain, generic white or brown shrink-wrap; no lot tracing or plant codes

The 4 On-Site Quality Tests

You do not need an engineering laboratory to identify low-grade roofing shingles. Perform these simple checks directly on delivered bundles:

1. The Friction & Granule Rub Test

Grab an individual shingle from the bundle and firmly drag your thumb across the textured mineral face using heavy downward pressure.

  • Genuine Shingle: Only a negligible pinch of surface dust should come free. The ceramic-mineral granules are pressed into molten asphalt during manufacturing and stay locked in place.

  • Substandard Shingle: Granules will rub off easily, leaving a bald, dark asphalt smear under your thumb. On your roof, normal rain runoff will wash these loose granules directly into your gutters, leaving the asphalt exposed to rapid solar breakdown.

2. The Packaging Audit & Batch Identification

Genuine international manufacturers ship shingles in heavy-duty, machine-sealed polythene wrappers designed to withstand marine transport and outdoor storage. Check the wrapper for:

  • Clearly legible manufacturer branding, logos, and product series names (e.g., IKO Cambridge, Dynasty, Armourshake).

  • Verifiable ASTM test compliance markings (ASTM D3462, ASTM D3161 Class F, ASTM E108 Class A).

  • An ink-jet printed production code along the bundle spine indicating the batch, plant number, and timestamp. Counterfeit bundles often arrive in plain plastic with generic names or poorly printed stick-on labels.

3. Weight and Mat Thickness Inspection

Pick up a single bundle. Quality laminated architectural shingles feature heavy fiberglass mats and weigh between 30 kg and 35 kg per bundle (approximately 10 to 14 kg/m² installed coverage).

  • Low-cost counterfeits frequently skimp on asphalt and binder content, producing lightweight bundles (often under 24 kg).

  • A lighter shingle lacks the structural thickness to lay flat under high winds, leading to edge flutter, tab curling, and blow-offs during monsoon storms.

4. The Flexibility & Tear Test

Take a cut-off scrap piece and bend it 90 degrees.

  • Certified shingles exhibit a rubberized flex, maintaining core integrity without splitting down the middle.

  • Cheap asphalt mixes loaded with excessive limestone or chalk filler will snap or tear with minimal resistance.

The Hidden Trap: “Too Good to Be True” Pricing

The easiest entry point for counterfeit shingles in the building trade is through drastically discounted pricing.

If an independent middleman or unverified supplier quotes square-foot rates that are 25% to 40% below authorized distributor pricing, they are almost certainly supplying:

  • Counterfeit copies made with non-durable filler binders.

  • Rejected factory “seconds” or expired factory lots where the adhesive strip has lost its bonding chemistry.

  • Older-generation organic felt shingles disguised as modern fiberglass laminated products.

While saving a small amount on material upfront may seem tempting, replacing a failed, waterlogged roof deck just 3 to 5 years later costs up to three times more than installing genuine materials the first time.

Protecting Your Build with Authorized Sourcing

The surest way to guarantee product authenticity is to purchase directly through verified, authorized regional distributors who can provide legitimate manufacturer-backed warranties.

As one of South India’s leading roofing specialists, Scaffs India supplies genuine, factory-fresh architectural and designer shingles sourced directly from international manufacturing partners like IKO. Every delivery includes valid technical datasheets, full batch traceability, and certified installation support to ensure your roof performs reliably for decades.
