At the core of every architectural shingle lies bitumen—the viscous petroleum compound responsible for binding mineral granules, providing hydrostatic water repellency, and sealing tabs against cyclonic winds.

However, not all asphalt is refined or formulated equally.

In budget roofing products, manufacturers rely strictly on standard blown (oxidized) asphalt. While adequate in temperate zones, oxidized asphalt faces severe degradation under tropical conditions. Continuous exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, ambient temperatures exceeding 38°C, and daily thermal shocks steadily leach volatile lighter oils from the bitumen matrix.
