Drip Edges, Rakes, and Eaves: The Perimeter Detailing That Stops Rot Before It Starts

When discussing roof water-shedding, attention naturally centers on the wide expanses of architectural shingles and high-capacity drainage gutters.

Yet forensic moisture surveys show that the most destructive decay often happens along the perimeter edges of the roof deck: the horizontal eaves (the low drainage gutters line) and the sloping rakes (the inclined gable ends).

Water possesses high surface tension and strong capillary adhesion. When sheet runoff reaches the edge of an un-flashed roof, it does not simply drop cleanly into the gutter. Instead, surface tension pulls water backward and inward—a physical phenomenon known as capillary curl.

Without an engineered drip edge, runoff curls around the bottom shingle lip, tracks across the exposed cut edge of the wooden or cement decking board, and runs down the face of the exterior fascia wood. Within two to three monsoon seasons, this uncontained moisture causes chronic fungal decay, paint blistering, and structural wood rot.

Anatomy of Capillary Water Creep

The interaction between flowing rainwater, surface wind, and structural edges creates three distinct moisture threats:

  • Capillary Curl: Water rolling off the bottom shingle clings to the underside, wetting the structural deck edge rather than discharging into the gutter basin.

  • Wind-Driven Splashback: Heavy gusts drive water backwards beneath the lowest shingle course if the eave lack a sealed underlayment transition.

  • Deck Edge Swelling: Cut edges of decking boards (whether marine plywood or fiber-cement boards) absorb ambient moisture faster than flat surfaces. If left uncovered, the perimeter swells, creating uneven, wavy eave lines.

The Metal Drip Edge: Profile and Anatomy

A certified drip edge is an L-shaped or T-shaped flashing profile bent from non-corrosive sheet metal (minimum 0.5 mm pre-painted aluminum, copper, or hot-dipped galvanized steel):

  • The Deck Flange: A wide, flat horizontal leg (minimum 50 mm to 75 mm wide) that lays flat on the structural decking board and is nailed securely flush.

  • The Vertical Apron: A drop leg (minimum 35 mm to 50 mm deep) that extends downward to cover the top edge of the decking sheet and the upper lip of the fascia board.

  • The Kick-Out “Drip” Hem: A crucial, outward-angled 45-degree flared bend along the bottom lip. This physical lip breaks the water’s surface tension, forcing raindrops to detach and fall cleanly into the center of the gutter channel without contacting the fascia.

Eave vs. Rake: The Golden Layering Sequence

The single most common mistake made by general masonry contractors is installing the drip edge in the wrong sequence relative to the synthetic underlayment.

Because water flows downward with gravity, the installation order must differ between horizontal eaves and sloping rakes:

  • Nails must be spaced every 250 mm to 300 mm along a staggered pattern to prevent metal buckling during seasonal temperature changes.

  • Fasteners must sit roughly 25 mm back from the interior bend, keeping nail heads safely back from the water-shedding drip line.

2. Lapping Metal Joints

Where two sections of metal drip edge meet along an eave or rake:

  • The adjoining piece must overlap by a minimum of 50 mm (2 inches).

  • On rakes, always install from the bottom eave upward toward the ridge peak so the upper piece overlaps the lower piece, preserving a gravity-fed water cascade.

3. The Shingle Overhang Rule

Even with a high-performance metal drip edge installed, field shingles must never be trimmed flush with the metal edge.

  • Starter shingles and the first course of architectural shingles must project outward past the drip edge by 10 mm to 15 mm (3/8″ to 1/2″).

  • This overhang ensures high-velocity water clears the metal lip entirely during cloudbursts, preventing high-speed runoff from running down the face of the gutter exterior.

The Starter Strip Integration

A drip edge works as an integrated system with the shingle starter course:

  • Standard field shingles feature cutouts and staggered edges. If field shingles are laid directly over the eave drip edge, water will track through the tab keyways and wet the flashing seam.

  • A continuous, uncut starter strip shingle (featuring a factory-applied adhesive sealant band along the lowest edge) is nailed directly over the drip edge.

  • When ambient heat activates the sealant strip, it chemically fuses the starter shingle to the metal drip edge flange, forming a sealed barrier that stops wind gusts from lifting the edge during monsoon storms.
